Plant production work for the restoration of habitat 4040 continues in Galicia*

With the aim of having locally sourced plant material available for use in future restoration tasks, plant production work for the restoration of priority habitat 4040* Coastal heaths with Erica vagans in Ribadeo continues throughout 2026 within the framework of WP14 of the LIFE GLOBAL project, continuing the actions initiated in 2025, when the collection of plant reproductive material began in the areas surrounding the sites planned for restoration.

Using seeds and cuttings collected during different phenological periods, thus ensuring greater availability and diversity of reproductive material, progress is being made in the propagation and cultivation of species characteristic of the habitat, with the aim of obtaining locally sourced plant material adapted to the ecological conditions of the territory and suitable for use in future restoration actions.

This work is essential to ensure the ecological quality of the plantings and to promote the recovery of the structure and floristic composition characteristic of Atlantic coastal heaths. Plant production is being carried out with the collaboration of the specialist team from the AgroBioTech for Health group at the University of Vigo, which provides technical support in the propagation, cultivation and monitoring of the plant material.

The continuation of this line of work will progressively make the plant material required to undertake the restoration actions planned by LIFE GLOBAL in Galicia available, contributing to the improvement of the conservation status of one of the priority habitats targeted by the project.
