The LIFE program
University of Santiago de Compostela
Since 1992, the LIFE Programme has been the only financial instrument of the European Union dedicated exclusively to the environment. The general objective of the LIFE Programme for the period 2004–2020 is to contribute to sustainable development and to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy and other relevant Union strategies and plans in the field of environment and climate.
This aims to catalyse changes in policy development and implementation by providing solutions and good practices to achieve environmental and climate objectives, as well as by promoting innovative technologies in the field of environment and climate change. It also supports the implementation of the General Union Environment Programme to 2020: “Living well, within the limits of our planet”.
The LIFE Program is divided into two sub-programmes, each with three priority areas.
Environment subprogram
to Mitigation of Climate Change
b. Nature and Biodiversity
c. Governance and Environmental Information
Climate Action subprogramme
to Mitigation of Climate Change
b. Adaptation to Climate Change
c. Climate Governance and Information
The LIFE Programme is managed by the European Commission, with the responsible authority in the Spanish State being the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
