After carrying out new collections of seeds and cuttings in Ribadeo (Galicia) of the characteristic species of habitat 4040* Coastal heaths of Erica vagans in the surroundings of the areas planned for their restoration by the LIFE GLOBAL project, the plant production tasks in the laboratory have begun by the specialist team of the AgroBioTech for Health group of the University of Vigo within its facilities.
The preliminary results show satisfactory rooting of the collected cuttings, thanks to the suitability of the established methodology. The collected seeds have also begun to germinate, with part of them even being transplanted. With respect to the in vitro establishment protocols, these are being optimized through the planning of collecting new samples during the summer and autumn.
This action is of great relevance for the objectives of the project, since the production of plant material of local and compatible origin by the LIFE GLOBAL project itself allows the availability of reproductive material to approach restoration with guarantees, as it avoids genetic contamination and the introduction of foreign ecotypes, which results in the replicability and catalytic potential of the project.
