OVERVIEW

The Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre – Montaña Palentina SAC (ES4140011) is located in the north of the province of Palencia, forming part of the Montaña Palentina on the southern slope of the Cantabrian Mountains, bordering León to the west and Cantabria to the north and east. It is a very mountainous area, characterized by the high altitude of its peaks, with peaks over 2,000 meters high such as Curavacas (2,528 m), Peña Prieta (2,538 m) or Espiguete (2,450 m), and by the marked differences in the valley floors, which can exceed 1,000 meters, with a representation of endemic forest habitats that motivates its protection and conservation.

Other protection statuses according to national or regional legislation:

Within the territorial scope of the SAC, other protected areas are included in accordance with national or regional legislation: the Protected Natural Area – Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina Natural Park, declared by Law 4/2000; 8 Wetlands of Special Interest (Decrees 125/2001 and 194/1994); 133 Public Utility Forests; 16 Cattle Trails; and the proposed 4 Flora Microreserves, which also house 7 Singular Trees. Furthermore, the SAC is within the scope of the Recovery Plans for the Brown Bear and the Cantabrian Bear, including a critical zone for the latter species.

CURRENT SITUATION AND CONSERVATION ACTIONS OF THE PROJECT

Regarding land ownership, the majority is public land, at 73%, while privately owned land represents 23%. The remaining 4% is considered undetermined. The actions proposed in the project on habitat 9560* Endemic Juniperus spp. forests are located on public land managed by the JCYL (Spanish Natural Reserve). LIFE GLOBAL proposes the implementation of actions that significantly contribute to improving the conservation status of habitat type 9560* Endemic Juniperus spp. forests in the Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina SAC (ES4140011). The actions will be carried out in Public Utility Forests in the province of León, managed by the JCYL, which guarantees the availability of the land and its subsequent monitoring and maintenance.
